On This Day in History
On May 20, 1927, Charles Lindbergh set off on the first successful solo, non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean. The American aviator made global history by flying the Spirit of St. Louis from New York to Paris in 33.5 hours. In 1954, Lindbergh received the Pulitzer Prize for his autobiographical tale of this record-breaking flight, which he named after the airplane he piloted.
Despite suffering great personal tragedy, Lindbergh continued to shape aviation and conservation throughout his life. The visionary championed commercial air travel and helped to lay the groundwork for modern transatlantic flights.
